Barrett Parents Association Board of Advisors
Eric and Sandra Balderas
Eric and Sandra Balderas joined the board in December 2012. Their middle daughter, Leslie, majors in biochemistry and is expected to graduate in the spring of 2016. Sandra works for U-Haul and Eric works at Azteca Plaza Formal Wear. The Balderases, who are native Arizonans, reside in Phoenix.
Cindy Block joined the board in January 2013. Cindy’s daughter, Courtney is majoring in English literature. She is expected to graduate in the spring of 2016. Cindy’s oldest daughter, Kelly, played soccer for UC Irvine and currently lives in Southern California. Prior to being involved with a behavioral school for dogs, Cindy had a corporate career in publishing. Cindy, a Chicago native, and her husband, Marty reside in Phoenix.
Allan Bone’s daughter, Stephanie, majors in civil engineering and is expected to graduate in the spring of 2016. Allan’s daughter Nicole will be a freshman at Barrett in Fall 2013. Allan owns an art gallery in Scottsdale and also is involved in real estate. Allan and his wife, Rosalia, reside in Scottsdale.
Valerie Ferry is the proud mother of Mark ‘16 a Barrett student in the Fulton School of Engineering. She is a member, prior board member and treasurer of the American Society of Women Accountants, a prior member, board member and treasurer of the Parent Teacher Association, a member of the Arizona Society of Certified Public Accountants and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Valerie is the senior manager of tax services at Schmidt Westergard.
Valerie, her husband Brad, and son enjoy taking their dog to the dog park and spending time on family hikes. In addition, Valerie has always enjoyed giving her time to her son’s schools. Valerie received her B.A from UCLA and was drawn to public accounting because she enjoys the interaction with clients, problem solving and providing quality service.
Scott Houts joined the board of advisors in January 2013. Scott’s daughter, Maddie, started at Barrett in fall 2012 and majors in business. Scott’s daughter Hannah is a junior in high school in San Diego. After working in the insurance industry (and for NASA while a student), Scott worked for the May Department Stores Company for several years. Scott went on to become a senior executive selected to start Macys.com. Thirteen years ago, Scott went to work for himself as an independent investor. Scott now devotes his time to local non-profits including the Challenged Athletes Foundation. Scott and his wife of over 27 years, Sally, are both graduates of University of Alabama and reside in San Diego.
Steve has served on the board since 2011. His daughter, Alexa, is majoring in global studies and is expected to graduate from Barrett in the spring of 2014. Steve and his wife, Alison, reside in Scottsdale.
Cliff and Toni Marnick
Cliff and Toni Marnick joined the board in September, 2013. Their daughter, Courtney, majors in Business Management and is expected to graduate in the Spring of 2017. Cliff is the Director of Finance at Jones Lang Lasalle. The Marnicks, who are originally from New York, relocated to North Phoenix in December, 2007.
Liz has served on the board since 2005. Her daughter, Cora, is a biological science major and an art history minor. She is expected to graduate in the spring of 2014. Liz also has a son, Patrick, who is an alumnus of Arizona State University. Liz works for ASU in the School of Earth and Space Exploration and runs a consulting business. Liz, and her husband, Kevin, who is a professor in ASU’s School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning, reside in Tempe.
Nick and Araceli Nebelsky
Nicholas and Araceli Nebelsky joined the board in September 2013. Their daughter, Johanna Alyssa is a freshman majoring in psychology with aspirations on becoming a pediatrician. She is expected to graduate in the spring of 2017. Araceli works for NTT Data at Honeywell and Nicholas is self-employed at Intense Media, LLC. The Nebelskys live in Gilbert.
Alan and his wife Jill moved to Scottsdale in August, 2013, just as their son Gabriel started as a Barrett student in the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism, class of ’17. Having had two older sons go to colleges far from home, they are very excited to be living in the same city where Gabriel is studying, leading to Alan’s desire to be part of the BPA Board. Alan is a Financial Advisor in the Kierland office of Morgan Stanley Wealth Management.
