This scholarship was created by Robert and Mary Anne Keegan, Matthew’s parents and Erica Keegan, Matthew’s sister. It is their desire that Matthew’s life continue to be an inspiration to others, especially those who are battling cancer.

Students affected by cancer face unique challenges. There are days when students are too ill recovering from surgery or from treatments to support themselves. The debilitating symptoms caused by both the disease and the treatments can make balancing academic and financial requirements almost impossible. The scholarship is meant to help ease the financial burden associated with the disease and support students to continue moving forward. Matthew’s dedication as a student and his determination to succeed even as he faced adversity is meant to inspire those that follow him. Students majoring in Finance, Marketing, or Supply Chain Management who have submitted a FAFSA and are either battling cancer themselves or have an immediate family member facing cancer are eligible for the scholarship. Financial need is not a prerequisite for application.

What is the FAFSA?

The FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Merit scholarships at ASU – those based on an academic accomplishment like the popular New American University Scholarship program – do not require the submission of the FAFSA. Need-based financial assistance requires the completion and submission of a FAFSA. In instances where a scholarship or grant factors in both student merit and need, the FAFSA may be required. Students are strongly encouraged, even if they are unsure that need-based financial assistance will be available, to submit a FAFSA.

Normally, the FAFSA becomes available each year on October 1; however, due to updates to the FAFSA, the 2024–2025 FAFSA is expected to be available in December 2023 (and not in October). The ASU priority filing date is January 15. Students hoping to be considered for Barrett scholarships must have their FAFSA on file by February 1.

How will I be notified?

Scholarship recipients will be notified of their awards via their ASU email by April 1. Please keep your email address up-to-date with the university through My ASU.
