Academic Services and Requirements
Barrett Requirements
Barrett accepts high performing, academically engaged students and works with them in collaboration with all of the units at ASU to contribute to student success. Below is a minimum set of guidelines for Barrett students. We do not expel students from Barrett for poor performance or for falling behind on requirements, but work with them to meet the requirements. We wish to work with all of the units to help students meet their requirements, as well.

Students Entering Barrett with Lower Division Status
There are two types of Lower Division Entry to Barrett, The Honors College at ASU:
1) First-year students entering the university directly out of high school. For example, students graduating from high school in the spring of 2010 and planning to enroll at ASU in the fall of 2010. (Students who took time off after high school, did not attend elsewhere, and are entering the university for the first time should also consider themselves first-year students applying for Lower Division Entry). Academic Advising
Barrett students benefit from a three-pronged approach to advising. Each Barrett student is assigned a staff advisor in the college or department of his/her major, a Barrett Honors Advisor, and a Faculty Honors Advisor.
I. Advising in the Major
In addition to the assigned Honors Advisor, honors college students also have an academic advisor in their program of study. Within the major (also referred to as an academic discipline) students work with this advisor towards completion of their specific program of study including General Studies and College and major requirements. To access the ASU advising directory visit http://www.asu.edu/duas/cas/directory/
II. Barrett Advising:
A dedicated Honors Advisor is assigned to each incoming Barrett student. Barrett honors advising is mandatory and required during semesters 1, 3 and 6. The Honors Advisor provides tools for navigating honors requirements and connects students to campus-wide resources, extraordinary opportunities, and programs that create a unique honors experience. Barrett Honors College advisors offer support, articulate the honors curriculum, and encourage honors students to travel overseas and participate in undergraduate research, internship or community service projects and opportunities.
Honors Advisors are assigned by ASU campus affiliation and student last name. Honors Advisors on the ASU Tempe campus are located in Sage North Hall, Room 110. Appointments are recommended though walk-ins are accepted, time permitting, during regular office hours of 8-5, Monday through Friday. To schedule a mandatory advising appointment or meet with an Honors Advisor contact the Barrett Advising Office at 480-965-9155. Mandatory advising appointments must be in person sessions, though Barrett students can utilize the Barrett Advising list serve and communicate with an honors advisor via email at Brady.Hamilton@asu.edu.

III. Faculty Honors Advisors
As a Barrett student you have the special resources of a faculty member in your major who has agreed to be an advisor to all honors students. This person is designated “Faculty Honors Advisor” and is available to help each of you with any questions or problems that pertain to that major. In addition, you may go to the Faculty Honors Advisor in any department with questions about courses and opportunities, internships and creative activities within their departments. To see the Faculty Honors Advisors for 2009-2010, review the FHA 09/10 List.
Deans Jacobs, Nelson and Nielsen are also available to discuss issues and ideas with you. Appointments with them can be made through Sarah Berguetski.
Engaging with Faculty
Barrett Faculty Fellows and faculty from ASU’s many departments, programs, and colleges teach honors courses because they enjoy working with engaged students and find interdisciplinary approaches to their subjects satisfying. We can not stress enough the degree to which your honors experience is enriched by working with faculty who are in many cases nationally or internationally recognized experts in their field. In working with a thesis director, members of a thesis/creative project committee, honors disciplinary advisors, or faculty mentors on varying research projects, honors students gain the pleasure of pursuing a topic that they may never have considered within their intellectual reach. The rewards are vast and allow you to develop skills in research, analysis, observation, and communication that are applicable throughout life. The experience of seeing a large scale project to completion is invaluable, cultivating self-confidence through mastering a difficult challenge. In addition, the rewards of your effort are often acknowledged with a letter of recommendation from these faculty who are widely recognized by colleagues in the field, a letter often invaluable for acceptance into the best graduate schools or in securing the best positions available in industry.
Seize the opportunity to engage with disciplinary faculty and get to know your Barrett Faculty Fellow professors.
Honors Listserv
Also known as the ”honors-l,” all Barrett students are strongly encouraged to sign up for the college listserv, which serves as the primary method of communication between the deans, faculty and staff of the college and the student body. Available internships, current research positions both on and off campus, employment opportunities, study abroad programs, upcoming events and more are all announced through the listserv.
Students may subscribe to the listserv by e-mailing Chelsea.Overstreet@asu.edu with -Subscribe Honors-L- in the subject line. Be sure to include both your name and e-mail address in the body of the message.
