Honors Parents
Honors Parents

Barrett, The Honors College recognizes how important parents are to a student’s successful and fulfilling educational experience. We also know how much easier it can be to support and encourage your student if you have a good base of knowledge and feel that you are a part of our educational community. Barrett, the Honors College prizes parents and encourages active family participation in the college experience. Honors Parents in the Valley meet every other month to hear dynamic presentations about BHC and ASU student life, plan their involvement in upcoming college activities, and socialize.
The Honors Parents organization is a unique and very special part of Barrett, the Honors College. It is a voluntary, non-fee based group of parents across the country who are committed to the life and future development of the college through active participation in the following:
- Events and Activities: Throughout the year, parents plan and participate in many activities and BHC events, including Welcome Week, Family Weekend, the Rhodes and Centennial lectures, the Celebrating Honors Festival, Smoothie Saturdays, fall and spring graduation receptions, Convocation, and many more! Honors Parents volunteers are among the college’s greatest assets.
- Recruitment: Prospective students and parents always enjoy hearing a parent discussing their feelings about the honors experience. Whether serving as a parent host at a recruitment event, meeting with or contacting prospective students and their families at the BHC complex or in your geographic area, or assisting with follow-up phone calls and e-mails, you can be a vital part of the recruitment process. We would love to have your active involvement.
- Internships: If your place of employment is in need of interns, there is no better place to turn than to Barrett, the Honors College, where many students are interested in internship opportunities to grow and develop their skills. For more information on internships, contact Jill Johnson.
- Mentoring: Honors Parents volunteer to serve as third readers on honors thesis projects or to meet with students on areas of special interest or expertise. For more information on how you can be involved in the fascinating and rewarding honors thesis process (and learn more about your son’s or daughter’s honors program at the same time!), contact Will Roberts.
- Annual Fund: In addition to a much appreciated contribution to help fund the Ted Humphrey Endowed Scholarship, participation in the Annual Fund also benefits the college. Through your charitable support as parents, we are able to increase scholarship funding, provide greater technology resources, enhance program offerings, and expand and beautify our campus and physical environment. Should you have any questions about specific giving opportunities at the BHC, please contact e-mail. For your convenience, the Annual Fund now provides a gift form online. Click here to access the Annual Fund webpage. If you would like your gift to be directed to Barrett you may specifically donate to the honors college Dean’s Investment Fund.
- Barrett Boosters: All BHC parents, whether living in Arizona or in more distant places across the nation and around the globe, are part of Honors Parents. Barrett Boosters are those who also wish to make a contribution to be used to specifically support the many ways Honors Parents serves the college and our students. These contributions help fund many Honors Parents initiatives, including the August welcome reception, the Barrett Honors College Family Weekend Voyage of Discovery, the May and December celebrations for graduates and their families and Smoothie Saturdays during fall and spring exam weeks. Would you like to help? Be sure to fill out and submit the Barrett Boosters Contribution Form.
E-mail Listservs:
Two e-mail list-servs (one for all families and one just for Arizona families) keep folks connected to the college throughout the year. Upcoming events and activities, along with college news and important reminders, are also sent to all HP list-serv members. Many of our parents so enjoy these communications that they remain part of the list-serv after their sons and daughters have graduated! TO JOIN THE HONORS PARENTS LIST-SERV, complete this form and follow the return instructions on the document.
ASU Parents Association: Although it is a separate and unique organization, Honors Parents works collaboratively with the ASU Parents Association. The Parents Association provides many opportunities for ASU parent involvement and offers wonderful benefits for its members. Among other things, membership supports student scholarships and helps fund Sun Devil 101 Welcome Week and Family Weekend. For more information on Parent Programs and the ASU Parents Association, click here. The Parents Association provides wonderful opportunities for involvement in the University, while offering terrific benefits.
