We recruit and hire tutors every January for the coming academic year. 

Here you will find all the information you need about the job if you are interested in submitting an application for next academic year!

We are currently hiring new tutors for the Tempe, Downtown, and West campuses. This job is work study eligible, and pay is $16.90/hour.

Essential Duties include:

  • One-to-one tutoring for Barrett students who take HON 171/272: The Human Event and HON 370: The History of Ideas, as well as other HON upper-division special topics courses.
  • One-to-one tutoring for Barrett students who are writing an Honors Thesis or are working on national or international scholarship applications
  • Organizing events, creating resources, and leading workshops for Barrett students
  • Attending new student events, visiting classes, tabling, and other venues for spreading the word about the BWC
  • Contributing to the day-to-day operations of the BWC, including social media, flyers, scheduling, communicating with other tutors, etc.
  • Attending staff meetings

A significant amount of specialized training and experience is required.

Required qualifications:

  • Applicants must be actively enrolled in Barrett, The Honors College and in good standing.
  • Applicants must have and maintain a minimum cumulative and semester GPA of 3.0
  • Applicants must be at sophomore status or above, enrolled full-time in classes at ASU by the start of the appointment period
  • Applicants must have completed HON 171 and 272, or HON 370 with a grade of B+ or higher by the time of their hire. Students currently enrolled in these courses must complete them with a grade of B+ or higher before they can work as tutors.
  • Applicants must have strongly developed analytical writing skills. 
  • Successful completion of HON 394 Course, “Barrett Writing Center Tutor Training Seminar”. This course is offered every Spring, Session B, Fridays from 10:00-12:00pm. Contact Dr. Van Engen (dagmar.van.engen@asu.edu) with questions. (Registration for the course starts after interviews.) 
  • Applicants must have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to connect with and relate to a diverse population of students

Instructions to apply:

The application opens on Monday, January 8. Submit the following application materials to Brassring, the student jobs portal:

  1. cover letter detailing experience, how the applicant meets the qualifications for this position, and the applicant’s interest in the practice and teaching of writing 
  2. resume with contact information and one professional reference*
  3. an unofficial ASU transcript
  4. a copy of your best HON 171, HON 272 or HON 370 essay with instructor comments and the assignment prompt

Applications must include all required materials in order to be considered. We cannot accept applicants who are unavailable for the required tutor training course. It is recommended that your reference be your Human Event or History of Ideas professor, or another faculty member you have worked with closely on writing.

*please note: Brassring is set up to require 3 references, but the BWC only requires one. As a workaround, just enter your one reference 3 times.
