Title: Barrett, Australia: Documenting and Critiquing Human and Ecological Histories and Representations

Program Description: This program will give students the opportunity to explore a wide range of territory within Australia, from the country’s beautiful, culturally rich and cosmopolitan cities, to the natural wonders of the Outback, the Daintree Rainforest, the Great Barrier Reef, and the Gold Coast. Excursions will include things like: a variety of historical and cultural museum visits; snorkeling, where we will learn about Reef history and issues related to coral bleaching and sustainability; beginner surf lessons and a critique of “beach culture”; off-road tours of Outback regions near the Gold Coast; camping in bush territory; and visits to wildlife preserves like Fraser Island where students will see some of Australia’s unique flora and fauna. The interdisciplinary courses will ask students to examine scientific, historical, and political documents, literature, and film that paint a complex portrait of Australia’s past, present, and future.  Both site visits and course work are designed to be interdisciplinary, looking at cultural, scientific, literary, and political history, alongside current scientific and cultural issues related to sustainability, the rights of indigenous, and the representations of the peoples and landscapes of Australia. Students’ work will culminate in final research-based projects that intersect with their wide-ranging disciplinary interests, from scientific history and sustainability to political science and literary or film analysis/production.
