Title: Barrett in Vienna and London: Study 20th Century Movements in Architecture and Psychology

Description: This three-week program to Vienna and London will study the structures and intersections of 20th-century movements in Architecture and Psychology.  These cosmopolitan global cities have been the backdrop to intellectual firestorms and critical thinkers who have used the city as their canvas and consulting room to change the way that people see the world and each other.  During our time in Vienna, we will study the birth and early development of psychoanalysis through Sigmund Freud's interactions with professional associates and rivals, as well as the architecture of Imperial Vienna and the shift to Art Nouveau (Secession). In London, we will consider how Melanie Klein and Anna Freud developed Freud's original ideas through movements in object relations and ego psychology, as well as how modern ideas of technology and engineering pioneered a British architectural aesthetic in the midst of an ever-changing city.
