Arizona’s Invest in Ed campaign topic of Barrett, The Honors College Community Dialogue
Invest in Ed, the statewide campaign that successfully put a public school funding proposition on the Arizona ballot, will be the topic of the first Barrett, The Honors College Community Dialogue in 2021.
This Community Dialogue, Investing in Education in Arizona, will be facilitated by Honors Faculty Fellow Benjamin Y. Fong and feature Anabel Maldonado, state director for the Invest in Ed campaign. It is scheduled for 5-6:30 p.m., Thursday, March 4 via Zoom. Registration is available online.
The Invest in Ed campaign supported Proposition 208, which passed in the 2020 statewide election. It will raise income taxes on the top 1% of earners in order to fund public schools.
New funding for public schools is a particularly significant issue, as Arizona ranks low compared to other states in various funding metrics and Prop. 208 aims to change this situation, Fong said.
The dialogue will address the state of public education in Arizona and the organizing efforts behind Prop. 8. Participants will learn about the factors that generated Prop. 208, how the Invest in Ed campaign helped garner support for the proposition, and why voters approved it.
This is the first in a series of Community Dialogues planned for this year. Each dialogue is hosted by a member of the Barrett, The Honors College faculty.
“The goal of the Community Dialogues is to bring impactful community members to Barrett for conversations with faculty, students and staff to broaden knowledge about timely, topical, and relevant issues,” Fong said.
