Barrett Honors College students spent Spring Break-2018 in Prague, the city of a thousand spires and the capital of the Czech Republic, engaging in cultural and creative nonfiction writing activities.
Eighteen Barrett students and two faculty members enjoyed interacting with local culture and immersing themselves in the city’s rich history and lifestyle. During the trip, the students visited Charles University and local markets, learned about Prague culture through city tours, street art and a “coffee and cake” walking tour. They also ventured to Kuntá Hora, the famed “city of silver,” for an immersive day trip. Through participation in additional hands-on, cultural activities– including a Czech cooking class–the student travelers fostered connections with other Barrett students and strengthened their skills as developing writers.
To prepare for their travel experience, students enrolled in a Spring Session C Course-HON 394: "Writing about Self and Place, Prague," and authored weekly, introspective online assignments in January and February. Now that they have returned to campus, the students will compile their experiences in a multimedia portfolio that documents and reflects upon their travels. One hundred percent of participants reported that they would recommend this global intensive study abroad experience to their peers.
The Prague trip is one of several honors study abroad opportunities offered to Barrett students. Other trips include destinations such as Italy, Australia,Greece, England and Scotland.
