With professional speed skaters as parents, elite athleticism is a family affair for Barrett student Lieske Carleer
Athletic talent is in the blood of Sun Devil Soccer center back Lieske Carleer. Both of her parents were professional and national team skaters. Her mother, Grietje Carleer-Mulder, is famous in her own right, after breaking a world record in the 1980s.
Lieske is a sophomore in Barrett, The Honors College studying kinesiology at Arizona State University. Her mother is her role model.
As a former professional athlete, Grietje knew what it would take for her daughter to succeed as an elite athlete, and Lieske learned after her mother. Separated from her home in the Netherlands by thousands of miles and the Atlantic Ocean, Lieske, currently in Tempe, used any opportunity she could to praise her mother's successes.
"We need to emphasize my mom's career a bit more," Lieske said. "I just want to emphasize she has a lot of accomplishments as well."
