Dr. Soto is an archaeological anthropologist of migration and the US-Mexico borderlands. In this lecture and dialogue, we will consider the anthropology of body counts. Among the threads connecting the tragedies of our time—from migrants dying crossing the US-Mexico border, to deaths at the hands of police, and the scale of deaths related to COVID-19—is that all official death tallies connected to these are partial and fragmentary. Suggested reading for this talk is her recent short article, The dead must be counted, published at Sapiens.org, which we can use as a jumping off point for a dialogue.
