Most people consider forensic science as objective and error-free. Therefore, the disenchantment that follows miscarriages of justice due to scientific gross errors can generate distrust and distort the perceived value of scientific evidence in a criminal process. Understanding the factors that affect the value of the evidence from crime scene to court is essential to provide a robust testimony that represents the state of the art in the area of expertise. This talk will address some of the factors that give value to non-biological trace evidence and the challenges that are inspiring research in this area.
