Barrett in Peru: Culture and Performance in the Andes

Program Description:  This three-week program will give students an opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the Andean culture of Peru, exploring the marvels, mysteries, and mountains of Cusco and outlying areas. Students will learn about the history and politics of the Andean region, from the pre-Hispanic to the postmodern, while examining how indigenous cultural traditions persist and adapt to local and global developments. Students will also study Andean cultural performance by participating in three sacred performances of great magnitude - the Catholic Corpus Christi festival, the Incan Inti Raymi ceremony, and the four-day Inca Trail pilgrimage which terminates at Machu Picchu on the morning of the Winter Solstice.
