Honors Credit

An internship is defined by Barrett as a single, short-term work assignment that offers the student the opportunity to enhance classroom knowledge. Your internship should consist of career-related professional work experiences that will promote your academic and personal goals. The internship experience can be paid or unpaid, but it should not be a part-time job. The scope of your responsibilities should be more than basic administrative and clerical tasks.

Students are able to earn zero, two, or three credits for their internship experience combined with the coursework for HON 484.  See the table below for more information regarding the for-credit and zero-credit options for HON 484.

Parameters and Regulations

Students have substantial flexibility in finding internships. The college gives careful consideration to the student’s quality of internship experience. As a result, certain restrictions do apply as follows:

  1. Internships cannot be a continuation of a full-time, part-time or summer job.
  2. Internships must be NEW experiences; thus, students must start their internship and be enrolled in course credit during the same semester.
  3. Internships are not allowed with companies owned or managed, fully or in part, by family members nor can internship positions be supervised, directly or indirectly, by family members.
  4. Internships involving direct payments from clients and customers to students are not allowed.
  5. Internships at companies that have student ownership or promises of ownership to the students are not allowed.
  6. Internships cannot be used to receive credit for any other class in addition to HON 484.
  7. HON 484 can only be completed one time.

Internship Course Registration Process

Internship credit for HON 484 should be pursued as early as possible (usually in the preceding semester) in order to secure the internship itself and make sure that all appropriate pre-conditions are met for both the company and the college.  It is the student’s responsibility to navigate this process to meet the following deadlines.
