HON 394: Civilization and the Human Sense of Self

Cover of a book with the words The Ascent of Humanity on a dark red background

Society is awry. This course will examine how the forces of technology and culture have fostered the separation of humans from nature, as well as changed the nature of relationships. If you are a psychologist, it might mean separation from different parts of self. If you are a sociologist, it might mean a dissolution of community. If you are a religious person, it might mean separation from god. Will science deliver on the promise of a better life? Or must we change our philosophy and approach to survive and to attain the ascent of humanity? This interdisciplinary course will examine solutions that support “reunion,” on both philosophical and practical levels. This course will draw on many disciplines including history, philosophy, the sciences, religion, and business.
