Internship Description: 

Opportunity. Creativity. Contribution. It is all part of interning for the American Heart Association --- where interns can combine professional growth with personal fulfillment. The Greater Phoenix Division of the American Heart Association are seeking interns for the following positions: Community Impact, Heart Walk, Operations, and Youth Market.

Community Impact intern will work along-side the Community Impact Team and be responsible for assisting the team in the implementation of a sustainable culture of health within the diverse & vulnerable communities in Maricopa County. This is a volunteer internship with flexible hours that must fall within normal operational hours for the American Heart Association – Monday-Friday; 8:30am-5pm, with occasional evening or weekend hours depending on community events. The timeframe is January 2020 through May 2020. Some of the skills acquired could include:
• Increased knowledge of heart disease and stroke;
• Improved understanding of community needs as they relate to social determinants of health;
• Enhanced written and verbal communication skills;
• Honed deductive skills regarding research and reasoning; and
• Experience working in a professional office environment.
Some of the activities included are:
• Presenting educational information to large groups (20+ attendees);
• Analyze data and extrapolate patterns;
• Maintaining spreadsheets;
• Provide Excellent Customer Service; and
• General office and administrative duties.

Heart Walk intern will have the opportunity to do meaningful work with a team of passionate individuals while developing challenging new skill sets. You will be responsible for assisting with the development and implementation of fundraising activities and logistics support for the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk. This includes assistance planning events leading up to the Heart Walk and the main Heart Walk event, logistical assistance with supply orders and event materials, phone-banking event participants, financial and bookkeeping support to the Event Coordinator, etc. Some of the skills acquired could include:
• Ability to provide excellent customer service over the phone
• Knowledge of event management and record-keeping
• Understanding of event logistic coordination
• Support of volunteer engagement and motivation
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Experience working in a professional office environment
Some of the activities included are:
• Supporting the planning of events leading up to the Heart Walk, and the main Heart Walk event for C-suite executives
• Creating tool kits for participants and volunteers
• Contacting volunteers to thank/motivate them
• Assisting with event logistics/participate in event logistics planning meetings
• Working in the reporting program for Heart Walk (pulling reports, updating/entering information, etc.)
• Tracking/implementing various projects
• Providing consistently excellent customer service in phone, email, and in-person contacts

Operations Intern is responsible for assisting with holistic and team-based support of the American Heart Association. The Operations duties will encompass systems and protocols surrounding office, health fair and volunteer management, organization and implementation of various health education initiatives, administrative tasks, and more. Some of the skills acquired could include:
• Experience recruiting, training, and managing volunteers
• Improved written and verbal communication skills
• Honed deductive skills in regard to research and reasoning
• Enhanced knowledge of health programs and community needs
• Ability to provide excellent customer service over the phone
• Knowledge of how to plan and execute community events
• Experience working in a professional office environment
Some of the activities included are:
• Creation of Supporting Documents for the AHA team.
• Perform administrative duties for the AHA team: make calls to donors, coordination of pre and post event information, coordination of logistics and data entry and other tasks as assigned.
• Work with volunteers to solicit and secure items for an auction, assist in planning and execution of ancillary events.
• Design and create event and campaign collateral.
• Data entry and analysis work of incoming finances.
• Assist staff with post event storage, organization and cleanup.
• Work with campaign committee on public education and health fairs which may require some travel (locally) as well as public speaking.
• Update Volunteer Tracking Spreadsheets and Databases
• Provide Updates on Volunteer and Event Participation
• Receptionist duties: answer incoming calls, greet visitors, and other tasks as assigned.
• Provide Excellent Customer Service

Youth Market Intern is responsible for assisting with the development and implementation of youth fundraising and education activities for the American Heart Association. Specific projects will include support for our heart-healthy programs in the Elementary, Middle and High Schools in Maricopa County. The Spring Internship will begin in January and end in May. Some of the skills acquired include:
• Experience working one on one with our Youth Market Directors and Coordinator
• Experience working with volunteers
• Understanding of event logistic coordination
• Improved written and verbal communication skills
• Experience educating youth about the importance of heart healthy living
• Ability to provide excellent customer service over the phone, email and in-person
• Experience working in a professional office environment
Some of the activities may include:
• Delivery and pick-up of event materials from schools
• Data Management of Schools via CRM
• Phone calls to schools for customer service check-ins
• Assist with event logistics
• Graphic designing
• Provide excellent customer service
• Promotion of heart healthy school presentations for grades K-8
• Attend events and assist volunteers with program activities



Desired Qualifications: 

The internships require the breadth and depth of education and experience needed to meet these objectives including:
• Excellent oral, written and presentation communication skills;
• Ability to work professionally in corporate and non-profit environments; and
• Ability to use Microsoft Office programs preferred (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
• Ability to speak and write fluently in both Spanish and English (specific to the Community Impact and Heart Walk interns);
• Reliable transportation to visit school event locations and make deliveries in Maricopa County (specific to Market Youth intern)
• Proven customer service skills (specific to Market Youth intern)
• Must be able to lift 50 pounds (specific to Market Youth intern)



Preferred Majors: 
public service, nutrition, public health, non-profit management, health communications, data management, graphic design, and other related fields
