Project Description: 

Northern peatlands emit about 12% of total of methane emissions and are among the highest natural sources of methane. Due to this and their carbon rich ecosystems, there are significant implications for global warming and effects on carbon cycling. Methane in these systems is produced by a community of microorganisms and their interdependent processes. We are just beginning to understand the effect of climate on these processes, and to do so an undergraduate student volunteer will work 10-12 hours a week over the summer investigating the anaerobic carbon decomposition cascade, and different avenues of biotic methane production within these systems. The student will use microcosm soil incubations, high pressure liquid chromatography and gas chromatography to track gas production and substrate consumption to predict carbon flow. Training will be provided, but applicants with prior research experience are encouraged to apply. There are opportunities for independent research projects within the lab and training on more sophisticated laboratory and analytical techniques.
